Cement-
The cement used in the construction of Uppal’s
Orchid is absolutely eco-friendly. The cement known
as the PPC (Portland Pozzalana Cement) contains 15-20%
fly ash compared to ordinary cement known as the OPC
(Ordinary Portland Cement).
Triple Glazed Windows-
The triple glazed windows comprise a hermetically sealed
double glazed unit and an added reflective glass. These
windows block the sun from entering the room and help
in conserving the air conditioning energy.
Interactive Televisions-
The televisions provided in each room enable the guest
and hotel management to interact without the use of
paper. For e.g. the guest can receive the messages order
service, welcome letter and his bills on the television.
Paints- The paints
used at Uppal’s Orchid are also eco friendly.
The paint for the exterior of the hotel is a water-based
paint with negligible VOC content of only 0.0125% and
the interiors are completely VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds)
free.
Potted Plants- Uppal’s
Orchid doesn’t use fresh cut flowers anywhere
in the hotel and decorative potted plants have been
used wherever required.Apart from these efforts to make
the hotel eco-friendly, many other practices have been
adopted in daily operations that further contribute
to the environment.
Hangers- The hangers
that are kept in the guestrooms are made of recycled
wood known as pressed particleboard and not plastic.
Fruits- In each room,
a fruit basket is provided only on the guest’s
request and thus minimizing wastage.
Amenities- The hotel
offers only herbal cosmetics, which are manufactured
under and ‘ayurvedic’ license. These products
are not tested on animals and do not contain any animal
fat.
Carpets- The carpets
that have been used in the hotel have 80% wool and 20%
nylon and natural dyes have been predominantly used
for making them.
Laundry- The hotel
provides reusable laundry bags for the guest instead
of the standard plastic or paper bags. The laundered
clothes are delivered back to the guest in reusable
cane baskets wrapped in muslin cloth.
Shopping Bags- The
shopping bags provided by the hotel are made of cloth.
Newspaper- The newspaper
is delivered in cloth bags instead of the usual paper
or plastic bags.
Stationary- All stationary
used at the hotel is made from recycled products. The
pens and pencils are made from recycled cardboard, reprocessed
plastic and scrap wood. The eco pencils are not made
from wood but of a non-toxic polymer with the use of
natural fillers. Wood saver pencils are made using biodegradable
material such as talc, gypsum and clay. The folders
kept in the rooms are made of jute.
Recycling Bins- Separate
recycling bins have been used for different types of
garbage. In the rooms, bins with stickers have been
provided offering the guests the choice of participating
in the hotel’s mission statement.
Recycled Garbage Bags-
The garbage bags used are made from recycled plastic
and milk pouches.
Carbon Paper- There
is no use of carbon paper in the hotel as the chemical
in carbon paper are toxic and kills all micro-organisms
that break down solid waste.
Slippers- The slippers,
which are provided in the guestrooms, are eco-friendly
(made of reed and not plastic) and specially hand crafted
for the guest’s comfort. |
